Pluck a Duck Anyone?

I was in a great conundrum about getting a turkey this thanksgiving.  I wanted something fresh and chemical-free, you know something sustainable and healthy.  This morning there was a knock at our door and look what the universe gave me!  Look at these gorgeous Warwick men with these gorgeous ducks, caught here on the farm, this very morning.  It doesn't get any more local, sustainable or healthy than that.

Now, it's very much like the Great Mother to give us something that requires our growth and the expansion of oneself.  I just watched an Oprah episode about "Stepping Outside the Box" last night.  Funny thing - that is where I function best!  So here I am learning how to pluck a duck.  Ben, my vegetarian son & chef is here to offer help if I need it.  But, I will try and spare him the "carnage".  He offered to photograph the fun.  I'm trying to talk my farmer friends who are coming over tonight into helping.

You know I really have been feeling drawn to being more connected to all my food.  Reading the Clan of the Cave Bear series has inspired me, not only to know more about herbal qualities and wild crafting.  But, being able to sustain myself and my family in all ways.  I told the guys I wanted to go hunting with them sometime and they agreed (although they said the waders would be up to my ears).

Anyway, I have to start somewhere, so stay tuned to see more of the duck-plucking adventures!

Happy, but, in the WEEDS.

It has been a spectacular week for Lulu's Garden! So many lovely plates spinning in the air.  I've been focusing on sales and met so many wonderful people!  A BIG shout out to Checkers in Lawrence, our first client.  We will be doing a cooking demos there next week with our herbs and produce (they are also selling our spiciy mesclun mix, swiss chard & kale!).  We have newly established accounts that we love - both 715 and Pachamamas in Lawrence.  Next week we will be delivering to our new accounts, The Merc in Lawrence and the Kansas City Country Club.  We are very excited about all the new business and interest in our lucious fresh herbs and produce.

I never imagined that the plants would respond so well to our tender nurturing.

They are plants grown from seed in our dining room over the winter!

The luscious plants also mean luscious weeds.  Here's Ben doing "night weeding" this week.  Check out the size of these from the back row!

Thank you to all of you:

Farm helpers Ben, Dana, Robert, Ryan, Peyton, & the Hombres.

To Angie and Hadley for your continuing support in so many ways!

And to all of our customers Wes, Jim, Eric, Michael, Jason, Brian, Ken!

Spicy Mesclun Anyone?

Mesclun Locked and Loaded!  It's nutritious and delicious, and you can get it at Checkers in Lawrence.

Forkin' Farm

So we made our first sales with Checkers in Lawrence and are looking to develop new accounts.  So, I'm finally remembering why we went in business - not to mention the fun that we've had or how theraputic the work with the soil can be - oh yeah, it's to make a living!

So some of this blogging may seem like it's going backwards to catch us up.  Which is all very exciting after everything taking nearly twice as long as we planned - harvesting soil to build the beds, actually building the beds, modifying the beds (compost & sand), amending the beds (what is P K and uh oh nitrogen? - you should of seen the nice guys at the Baldwin Feed and Seed trying to deal with me -middle-aged hippie chick and my tattoed, hip hop artist, chef and now farm managing son)...

Anyway, everything in the infrastructure was done and then, thanks to the heavens or whatever powers that be (I think it was Mother Earth), Ben's Indian visa didn't come through and I have him for the summer.  Ben and I are very different, and I think complementary in our working styles.  I'm not sure exactly what he thinks, but he did add this phrase to the nice things he said about me in my birthday card "Sorry, for threatening to stab you in the neck with a fork."

Ben seems to rule the "Word of the Day" & the "Quote of the Day" boards on our farm. Like saying he felt unnatural in posed pictures.  I asked him when he started going for "natural" and he said "right after I removed my breast implants". More about our "complimentary" adventures coming soon.
